Franz II took the throne in 1792 at twenty-four, immediately inheriting a war with revolutionary France that would drain Habsburg finances for the better part of two decades. The billon 3 Kreutzer was a workhorse denomination through this period, with mintages spread across multiple facilities including Vienna, Prague, Günzburg, and Hall — a dispersal driven by wartime pressure on individual mints rather than any coordinated monetary policy.
By 1811, the Habsburg state was effectively bankrupt, and the Finanzpatent of that year devalued Austrian currency to one-fifth face value. Coins of this type that survived into circulation past that date were exchanged at a punishing rate.
