By 1805, Salzburg was in administrative freefall. Napoleon had secularized the archbishopric in 1803, and the territory passed briefly under Ferdinand III — formerly Grand Duke of Tuscany, displaced by the French reorganization of Italy — before Austria absorbed it outright in 1805. This coin sits at the precise hinge of that transition, issued under a ruler who had already lost one throne and was shortly to lose this one too.
Ferdinand's tenure over Salzburg lasted barely two years. The Pressburg treaty of December 1805 transferred the territory to Bavaria.
