Breda came under siege by Spanish forces during the broader Dutch Revolt, and the city — cut off from normal supply and financial channels — authorized emergency coinage to meet immediate military and administrative obligations. Siege gold of this period was typically struck from whatever metal was at hand, often from melted plate or jewelry donated or requisitioned under duress.
