Piedforts — struck at double thickness on specially prepared blanks — were never intended for circulation. In the Dutch Republic they functioned as presentation pieces, gifted to dignitaries or retained as official records of the die. Gelderland's issues of this type are among the rarest surviving Dutch provincial piedforts, with examples outside major institutional collections almost never appearing at auction.
The 1682 date falls during a period of intense pressure on the Dutch provincial mints, with the ongoing demands of the Franco-Dutch War straining silver supplies and mint capacity. That a piedfort was produced at all in this year makes the decision to allocate the metal and labor a deliberate one.
