Piedforts — struck at double or greater thickness on standard dies — were produced primarily as presentation pieces, proofs of die quality, or gifts to visiting dignitaries, never intended for circulation. West Friesland's provincial mint operated with considerable autonomy under the Dutch Republic, and such luxury strikes were one of the few areas where it could distinguish its output from the other six provincial mints striking near-identical coinage.
The Delmonte reference places this among a small group of documented survivors; S#1147a is rarely encountered outside major specialist auctions.
