Holland struck the 3 Gulden as a high-value domestic coin during a period when the province's finances were under severe strain from the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War and the subsequent collapse of the Amsterdam financial system. The piece circulated heavily in trade with the Baltic and Levant, where Dutch merchants still commanded enough commercial respect that provincial silver moved alongside VOC currency without significant discount.
The slanted reeding on the edge distinguishes this type from earlier Holland 3 Gulden issues and was introduced as an anti-clipping measure — a persistent problem with large-diameter silver throughout the Republic's final decades.
