Aanvullende informatie

August Wilhelm, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, died in March 1731, and this coin is one of several mourning issues struck to mark the occasion — a German territorial tradition that treated death as an occasion for commemorative coinage no less formal than a coronation. Louis Rudolph, who succeeded him, had himself only months left to rule before his own death in 1735 extinguished the Wolfenbüttel line entirely, forcing the territory's absorption into Brunswick-Bevern governance.
