Sigismund II Augustus inherited two crowns — Poland and Lithuania — but spent much of his reign trying to legally fuse them into a single polity. These groats were struck during the years of intense negotiation that preceded the 1569 Union of Lublin, when the Lithuanian nobility was still fiercely resisting incorporation and the Grand Duchy maintained its own mint, coinage, and fiscal identity as a deliberate assertion of separate standing.
The Vilnius mint produced this denomination across three consecutive years, accounting for the cluster of die varieties catalogued by both Kopicki and Gumowski. Minor differences in the monogram execution and shield placement distinguish the annual emissions.
