The Yakut ASSR was only formally established in April 1922, making this 1923 emission one of the earliest acts of economic administration by the new republic's institutions. The People's Commissariat of Trade and Industry issued these gold-denominated notes during a period when the Soviet ruble itself was barely functional — the chervonets reform was still working its way through the system, and remote regions like Yakutia operated on improvised local instruments backed, nominally at least, by gold equivalence rather than circulating metal.
Locally printed in Yakutsk under conditions that were, by any measure, rudimentary. The S-prefix Pick reference reflects its regional scrip status rather than recognition as a national emission.
