Rudolf II's Hungarian florins of this period were struck under the authority of the Kremnitz (Körmöcbánya) mint, the dominant gold-producing facility in the Habsburg hereditary lands and one of the most productive mints in sixteenth-century Europe. Rudolf's relationship with Hungary was perpetually strained — he never visited the kingdom after his coronation in 1572, governed largely through deputies, and spent most of his reign preoccupied with his court at Prague and, eventually, with the Long Turkish War that consumed the last decade of this issue's production window.
The twenty-one year date range reflects continuous production rather than a single emission, with minor die variations across the run.
