| 背面描述 | A full-color depiction of a grey wolf standing upright on a rocky outcrop, head raised and howling toward a large full moon above. The background, rendered in applied color, shows a nocturnal forest landscape with pine trees and a second wolf howling in the distance at left. The date '2017' is inscribed in the lower left field, and the species name 'WOLF' appears as a legend along the lower rim. |

Austria's 3-euro denomination was introduced in 2017 specifically for a wildlife-themed annual series aimed squarely at the collector and gift market — the face value is essentially fictional, priced to sell at three euros retail with no meaningful circulation intended. The wolf issue was the first in that series, launching what became a reliable annual release cycle for the mint.
Wolves had been functionally extinct in Austria for over a century before natural recolonization from Italy and Slovenia began in the 2010s, giving the subject a timely edge.
