Additional information

Austria's 3-euro denomination was introduced in 2017 specifically for a wildlife-themed annual series aimed squarely at the collector and gift market — the face value is essentially fictional, priced to sell at three euros retail with no meaningful circulation intended. The wolf issue was the first in that series, launching what became a reliable annual release cycle for the mint.

Wolves had been functionally extinct in Austria for over a century before natural recolonization from Italy and Slovenia began in the 2010s, giving the subject a timely edge.
