Austria's 3-euro "Animal" series launched in 2017 as an explicitly child-oriented collecting program, priced at face value to encourage young buyers. The denomination itself is the gimmick — three euros for a three-year-old's first coin, as the mint's own promotional logic ran. No prior Austrian circulation issue had used this denomination.
The crocodile was the inaugural subject, setting off an annual series that would eventually span a dozen species.
