Étréchy, a small commune in the Essonne department south of Paris, was among hundreds of French towns that issued local emergency currency — nécessités — during the 1990s collector-driven revival of the tradition. The Cercle Numismatique de la Juine, named for the Juine river running through the region, produced this piece primarily for the numismatic market rather than genuine commercial circulation, a practice that proliferated sharply in France ahead of the euro conversion deadline.
