| Aanvullende informatie |
Cowes issued local ECU-denominated pieces during the 1990s as part of a broader European enthusiasm for municipal and regional currencies tied to the ECU ahead of anticipated monetary union. The Isle of Wight Council was among dozens of British local authorities and towns that participated, though most did so with more civic pride than monetary logic — the ECU never became legal tender in the UK, and these pieces circulated, if at all, only by local convention.
The dual denomination pairing with the pound reflects the fixed ECU-to-sterling rate used by participating issuers at the time of striking.
