The Amicale Numismatique du Midi was among dozens of French regional numismatic clubs that issued fantasy ecu pieces during the early 1990s, riding a wave of local monetary nostalgia deliberately timed to the Maastricht Treaty debates. Beaumont-du-Périgord, a bastide town founded by the English in 1272 during their administration of Aquitaine, never issued coinage of its own — making this piece an invention of civic pride rather than a continuation of any historical monetary tradition.
