Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau became Archbishop of Salzburg in 1587 at just 28 years old, owing his appointment largely to his Medici family connections through his mother. His early years in office were marked by aggressive building programs — he demolished much of medieval Salzburg to rebuild it in Italian Baroque style — funded in part by the principality's immense salt revenues. Multiple-ducat issues of this period were almost certainly struck for presentation and diplomatic purposes rather than commerce.
Wolf Dietrich's reign ended badly: he was deposed in 1612 by Bavarian forces and died imprisoned in the Hohensalzburg fortress in 1617.
