Matthias II had himself crowned King of Hungary in 1608 and King of Bohemia in 1611 before finally wresting the imperial title from his brother Rudolf II — who abdicated in exchange for being left alone in Prague. The 1613 Vienna issue falls in the first year of Matthias's reign as Holy Roman Emperor, when the Vienna mint was reasserting its prestige after years of political turmoil between the two brothers had destabilized Habsburg administration.
Multi-ducat strikes of this period were almost never intended for circulation; they functioned as diplomatic gifts and court presentation pieces, which accounts for the survival rate of high-grade examples relative to the minuscule quantities produced.
