| Obverse description | The central field is occupied by a large intaglio vignette of a sidewheel steamship under combined steam and sail on open water, with smaller vessels rendered in the distance. Ornate hexagonal guilloche counters carrying the numeral 3 are stacked vertically along the left margin, and a circular portrait medallion of an unidentified male figure in formal dress appears at the lower right. A bold red lathe-work underprint reading THREE DOLLARS extends across the lower half of the note, with the bank title arching across the upper portion and the dual printer imprints of Bald, Cousland & Co. of Philadelphia and Baldwin, Bald & Cousland of New York running along the bottom edge. |
