Reverse description The reverse, struck on a Reuleaux triangular flan in proof finish, features a finely detailed gold-plated depiction of the Confederate blockade runner Mary Celestia under sail, shown at sea against a lightly engraved wave pattern. The vessel's rigging, hull, and masts are rendered with considerable relief and selectively gold-plated to contrast with the mirror-polished silver field. The ship's name MARY CELESTIA is inscribed along the left periphery in cursive script, accompanied by the Latin date inscription ANNO DOMINI 1864 along the upper right, commemorating the year of her sinking off Bermuda. The denomination THREE DOLLARS appears in the lower field.
