3 Dollars - Elizabeth II Newfoundland and Labrador, Pitcher Plant

The pitcher plant became Newfoundland's provincial emblem in 1954, chosen partly because it thrives in the boggy terrain that defines much of the island's interior — environments hostile to most cultivated flora but home to this carnivorous species. It had appeared on Newfoundland's colonial coinage as far back as the Victorian era, well before Confederation brought the dominion into Canada in 1949.

This issue belongs to the RCM's provincial flower series, struck in four-nines silver at a weight calibrated to that price point rather than any historical denomination logic. The $3 face value has no circulation ancestry.
