Edward VIII's abdication in December 1936 created an administrative scramble across British India, where princely states issuing coins under royal authority suddenly held dies bearing the name of a king who no longer reigned. Kutch was among the few states that had already struck pieces naming Edward VIII before the abdication took effect, making this issue one of the shortest-lived regal coinages in the subcontinent's history. Khengarji III had ruled Kutch since 1876 and maintained his own parallel naming convention on local coinage throughout.
