The cinquina was a deeply Neapolitan denomination, its name derived from the five-grain unit of account that had structured southern Italian commerce since the Aragonese period. Under Spanish rule, Naples functioned as a cash cow for the Crown — Philip III's wars in the Low Countries and along the northern Italian frontier demanded constant remittance, and the mint at Naples ran hard through the 1610s to meet it.
