Carlo II of Spain held Naples as a hereditary possession throughout his reign, but governed it almost entirely through viceroys — the king himself never set foot in the kingdom. The 3 Cavalli was the smallest copper denomination in circulation, and these pieces absorbed the hardest daily use Naples could deliver. The Magliocca references 69 and 70 distinguish between the two minting years, with minor die differences documented between them.
