| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a plain inner rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion reading 'Jianyan Tongbao' (建炎通寶). The character 建 (Jian) appears at the top, 通 (Tong) to the right, 寶 (Bao) at the bottom, and 炎 (Yan) to the left. The characters are boldly cast in raised relief within a well-defined inner square border, with a broad outer rim enclosing the design. The field between the characters and the rims is relatively plain, consistent with Southern Song Dynasty cast coinage style. |
