Jiading Anbao cash were struck during the reign of Emperor Ningzong, a period when Song military expenditure against the Jurchen Jin dynasty had so depleted copper reserves that iron became the default minting material across large parts of southern China. Iron coinage of this era was chronically undervalued by the population, frequently melted, and suffered accelerated corrosion in southern humidity — which explains the rarity of survivors in collectible condition.
