The Hongwu Emperor's cash coinage system was among the most administratively ambitious of any Chinese dynasty at its outset — denominations ranging from 1 to 10 cash were issued simultaneously, each with distinct weight standards intended to rationalize trade after the monetary chaos of the late Yuan period. The experiment largely failed. By the early 1380s, the government pivoted toward paper currency, and large-denomination bronze cash like this 3-cash piece saw sharply reduced production before the series was effectively abandoned.
The "Yu" mint designation identifies production at Nanjing's auxiliary casting operation. Hartill 20.95 is among the more elusive mint-denomination combinations within the Hongwu series.
