Obverse description Cast bronze cash coin with a central square perforation. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom then right-to-left: 洪 (Hóng) above, 武 (Wǔ) below, 通 (Tōng) to the right, and 寶 (Bǎo) to the left, together forming the reign-title inscription 洪武通寶 (Hongwu Tongbao). The characters are boldly cast in moderate relief within a plain inner rim, with a flat field and outer rim encircling the design.
