The Dazhong Tongbao was issued by Zhu Yuanzhang before he formally established the Ming dynasty, during the period when he controlled significant territory but had not yet proclaimed himself emperor. The "Yu" designation indicates this piece was cast at Jiujiang, one of several regional mints operating under his authority during the consolidation campaigns against rival warlords. Zhu subsequently suppressed his own Dazhong coinage after founding the Ming in 1368, replacing it with the Hongwu Tongbao series — making the entire Dazhong issue a product of a state that existed for less than a decade.
