Daguan Tongbao coinage was authorized by Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song dynasty, who took the throne in 1100 and proved far more gifted as a calligrapher than as a ruler. The reign title Daguan — "Great Contemplation" — ran only from 1107 to 1110, a narrow window that limits surviving output. Huizong himself is credited with designing the calligraphic style used on these coins, a slender script known as slender gold, which he developed and which appears nowhere else in the Song monetary series.
Iron cash of this period circulated primarily in frontier regions where copper was administratively restricted or strategically hoarded for military use.
