| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by four raised character panels arranged in cruciform fashion, each containing one character of the ʼPhags-pa script legend reading top to bottom, right to left. The four characters, rendered in relief within plain rectangular cartouches, transcribe the Chinese reign title Da De Tong Bao ('Universal Currency of the Dade era'). The fields between the character panels are plain and slightly concave, and the coin is framed by a raised outer rim. The casting is characteristic of Yuan dynasty workshop production, with bold, well-defined strokes. |
