Carlo II of Spain ruled Sardinia as an absentee sovereign throughout this period, with the island administered by a series of viceroys while the king himself — chronically ill, cognitively impaired, and the last of the Spanish Habsburgs — never set foot there. The Cagliari mint operated under persistent financial strain, and copper coinage of this type circulated heavily among the island's poor while silver remained scarce in local trade.
MIR 91 lists several die variants across the nearly three-decade span of this issue, and examples struck in the earlier years of the reign tend to show cruder workmanship than later ones.
