Obverse description Central device depicts a radiant Phrygian cap inscribed LIBERTAD, from which long alternating straight and wavy rays emanate to fill the field — the standard obverse type of the Mexican 8 Reales. Four Japanese countermarks are applied around the upper portion of the design: an oval punch at upper left, a rectangular punch at upper center-left, a small rectangular punch at upper center-right, and a circular punch at right, bearing kanji characters reading 改 三 分 定 (authorizing the coin as equivalent to 3 Bu). The circular legend surrounding the design reads 8 R. Mo. 1859. F.H. 10 Ds. 20 Gs., recording the denomination, mint assayers' initials, date, fineness, and weight.
