Obverse description Mexican republican eagle displayed facing left, perched upon a prickly pear cactus growing from a rocky outcrop, with a serpent grasped in its beak, wings outstretched in heraldic fashion. The central device is flanked by a wreath composed of oak branches on the left and laurel on the right. The circumferential legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA arcs across the upper field, contained within a toothed or beaded border. The overall design follows the established Mexican republican coinage style of the mid-nineteenth century.
