Miletopolis, a small Mysian city on the Macestus River, struck this civic bronze under Roman provincial authority during a period when dozens of minor Asian cities were asserting local identity through coinage — not for trade, but for prestige and ceremonial distribution. The Demos type, invoking the citizen body itself as issuing authority, was a deliberate political gesture common to cities navigating the transition from Hellenistic civic autonomy to Roman administrative oversight.
The SNG von Aulock specimen remains the most frequently cited comparative for this type. Miletopolis issues are genuinely scarce in any collection.
