The Gorch Fock depicted here is the second vessel to bear that name — a West German naval training barque launched in 1958, still in service with the Deutsche Marine. Why the DPRK's central bank issued a gold coin commemorating a West German tall ship in 1988 is not immediately obvious, but it fits a pattern of North Korean hard-currency issues from this decade that targeted European collector markets with no domestic relevance whatsoever. The coins were never intended to circulate.
Kahle's reference system places this among a tight cluster of 1988 North Korean gold issues aimed squarely at German buyers.
