Mongolia's millennial dragon coin was part of a broader wave of Asian-market bullion issues timed to the Year of the Dragon in 2000, a year carrying particular commercial weight given the simultaneous turn of the millennium. The .9999 fineness places it among the purest gold issues of its era — finer than the Krugerrand, the Maple Leaf's standard at the time, and most sovereign bullion programs then in production.
