Mongolia's millennial dragon coin was part of a broader wave of large-format silver issues produced around 2000 by smaller central banks leveraging the collector market — the Bank of Mongolia among the more active participants. At 155.5 grams, the planchet is a 5-troy-ounce specification, a weight standard that became increasingly common in the late 1990s as mints competed for the bullion-collector crossover buyer.
The year 2000 also corresponded with a Lunar Year of the Dragon, the most commercially desirable animal in the twelve-year cycle and reliably the strongest seller in Southeast and East Asian numismatic markets.
