Somaliland's unrecognized status — it declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never received UN membership — means its central bank issues currency that functions domestically but holds no standing in international exchange. Collector-targeted commemorative issues like this one are a significant revenue stream precisely because that status creates no obligation to back the coins with convertible reserves. Elizabeth II had no formal connection to Somaliland or Somalia.
