Tanzania's large-format silver issues of the late 1990s were produced primarily for the collector export market, with the Bank of Tanzania authorizing several high-weight pieces during this period as a source of foreign currency revenue rather than for any domestic monetary purpose. KM#35 is among the heaviest of these, at five troy ounces — a specification shared with a small number of other wildlife-themed issues from the same authorization cycle.
The zebra series specifically drew on Tanzania's position bordering the Serengeti, home to the largest zebra migration on the continent.
