Obverse description The Tanzanian national coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring a shield supported by two standing figures — a warrior to the left and a woman to the right — flanked by elephant tusks rising behind the shield. The shield displays a crossed axe and hoe over wavy lines, with a torch at its crest. A ribbon scroll at the base bears the national motto in Swahili: UHURU NA UMOJA. The legend TANZANIA arcs along the upper periphery, and the date 1998 appears in large numerals at the bottom of the field.
