Tanzania's large-format silver issues of the late 1990s were produced almost exclusively for the collector export market — the Bank of Tanzania had no realistic expectation these would circulate domestically. The 155-gram specification places this firmly in the tradition of oversized proof-style bullion pieces commissioned through European minting intermediaries during that decade, a common arrangement for smaller African central banks lacking their own mint infrastructure.
