Obverse description The Tanzanian national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield supported by two female figures in traditional dress, one on each side. The shield bears crossed spears and axes over wavy lines representing the sea, surmounted by a flaming torch. A ribbon below the shield bears the national motto in Swahili: UHURU NA UMOJA. The legend TANZANIA arcs across the upper field in widely spaced capital letters, while the date 1998 appears in large numerals across the lower field.

The circular legend SERENGETI WILDLIFE arcs across the upper field, flanked by decorative dot borders.
