| Obverse description | Bare-headed, diademed bust of Queen Maria II facing left, her hair elaborately dressed in ringlets and gathered at the nape with a braided ornament, engraved in a refined neoclassical style attributed to William Wyon. The legend MARIA.II.PORTUG:ET.ALGARB:REGINA curves along the upper periphery, separated by stops, with the date 1836 positioned in the lower exergual area of the field. The portrait is finely modelled with delicate high relief, characteristic of Wyon's work for Royal Mint pattern coinage. |
