The BEAC issues coinage on behalf of six member states — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of the Congo — which share the CFA franc under a monetary union dating to the post-independence reorganization of 1972. This piece belongs to a playing card series, a format with precedent stretching back to 17th-century New France, where actual playing cards were signed and used as emergency currency when coin shipments from Paris failed to arrive.
The 2016 vintage of this series was struck at the Monnaie de Paris under license.
