Reverse description Left-facing bust of Mieszko I, the first historical ruler of Poland, positioned at right, rendered in high relief. At centre, a stylized outline map of Poland is depicted above a cross, symbolizing the Christianization of the Polish state. The legend CHRZEST POLSKI 966 appears in the field, commemorating the baptism of Poland in 966 AD, a foundational event in Polish national identity. The overall design references the 1050th anniversary of that event.

Additional information

Cameroon's use of Polish historical figures on commemorative coinage stems from a broader Central African mint program that regularly issues coins with no meaningful connection to the issuing nation — a commercial arrangement between minting firms and the Cameroonian government that has generated hundreds of foreign-themed pieces since the 2000s. Mieszko I, the 10th-century Piast duke credited with founding the Polish state and adopting Christianity in 966, appears here entirely for the Polish collector market.

The 966 baptism date is the only fixed anchor in Mieszko's biography — his birth year remains unknown.
