| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Cape Verde occupies the central field, depicting a torch-bearing emblem encircled by the motto legend UNIDADE TRABALHO PROGRESSO, flanked by stylized stalks of corn and surmounted by a five-pointed star. The whole device is enclosed within a wreath-like arrangement resting on a decorative base. The circumferential legend REPÚBLICA DE CABOVERDE arcs around the upper periphery, with the date 1976 positioned above the central emblem. The denomination 2.500 ESCUDOS is inscribed in large raised letters along the lower portion of the field. |

| Additional information |
Cabo Verde declared independence from Portugal on July 5, 1975, ending over five centuries of colonial rule. This 1976 gold issue was among the first coins struck under the authority of the newly established Banco de Cabo Verde, making it one of the earliest numismatic expressions of the new state. The PAIGC — the liberation movement that had simultaneously fought for Guinea-Bissau's independence — initially governed both nations under a projected unity that would collapse by 1981.
