Greece hosted the 1982 Pan-European Athletics Championships in Athens — the first edition of what would later become the European Athletics Championships under that name. The issue was part of a broader Greek commemorative gold program that flourished in the early 1980s as the country adjusted to EEC membership and sought hard currency.
The .900 fineness follows the older continental gold standard rather than the .999 or .9167 used by most contemporaries, a deliberate nod to pre-war Hellenic coinage tradition.
