| Obverse description | The Greek national coat of arms, a shield bearing a white cross on blue, is depicted at the centre of the field, surrounded by an olive wreath tied at the base. The circular legend ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ (Hellenic Republic) runs along the upper periphery in Greek characters. Below the arms, the denomination ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ 2500 is inscribed in two lines, with the date 1982 appearing at the bottom of the field. |

Greece hosted the 1982 Pan-European Athletics Championships in Athens — the first edition of what would later become the European Athletics Championships under that name. The issue was part of a broader Greek commemorative gold program that flourished in the early 1980s as the country adjusted to EEC membership and sought hard currency.
The .900 fineness follows the older continental gold standard rather than the .999 or .9167 used by most contemporaries, a deliberate nod to pre-war Hellenic coinage tradition.
