Issued to mark the 500th anniversary run-up commemorations, this piece belongs to a wave of Caribbean gold issues that anticipated the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's first landfall — a voyage that made the Bahamian island of Guanahani, almost certainly San Salvador, the first point of European contact with the Americas. The Bahamas had particular standing to issue such a coin; no other modern nation sits closer to where Columbus first anchored.
At over 400 grams of 22-karat gold, production was necessarily limited, and the issue was never intended for circulation. Fr#41 is among the heaviest non-bullion commemorative gold pieces struck by any Caribbean issuing authority in the twentieth century.
